tv0571's Full Review: Grado SR-125 Professional Headphones
Other reviews here seem pretty accurate, but don't provide a context as to what kind of recording or performance was considered to be 'warm' or 'bass heavy' or have 'too much treble.'
I am a classical music lover and have listened to enough of my disks on my new Grados to know that the recording is everything here. Recording mix characteristics vary drastically by genre and label. There is nothing like acoustic music to bring out the flaws in sound reproduction. If you want to know whether the store's $15,000 system is any good, you take in a disk of solo piano or acoustic guitar, then move into something with dynamic range and color.
Back to the Grados. The pizzacato of the strings and the plucking of the harp are so delicately yet sharply rendered that even at low volumes they make your eyelashes vibrate (Mahler 2). How about a tuba that still has an edge on his tone, and overtones too? It was the first time I ever heard a baritone sticking out in a favorite recording (Prayers of Kierkegard-Barber). Or get inside Glenn Gould's head as he mumbles along to Bach (Well Tempered Clavier).
Yes, on many recordings, these headphones are so crisp that they probably go beyond what the recording engineer expected you to hear. But that's the fun part!
They make you want to go out and buy better recordings! No more cheap Eastern European CD's for me :)
Final thought - many of the reviews suggest these cans need a 'burn-in'. I can't say. I bought mine on Ebay. They are in great condition, sound great, and were $40 less than new.
