slawsky54's Full Review: Grado SR80 Professional Headphones
Bought a set of SR-80s last week after reading the reviews. I found them on sale at Cambridge Soundworks for $85 and decided to give them a try. What a great set of phones!
My journey began with a set of fairly basic Sonys that were fine for a number of years. When I decided to go for quality phones, I bought Senn HD-455s. These were a big improvement in quality, though I noticed a lack of clarity, particularly at the treble end.
A couple of years ago, I went for the Shure E3Cs. Very cool once I got used to sticking those things in my ears. The bass was just fine (once I figured out how to get them far enough into my ears) and the sounds are very clear. But there was something missing.
After reading about the Grados, and finding them on sale, I decided to jump again - far and away the best I've had. There's simply no comparison to the Shures. The sound is much richer, the bass deeper, and the mids and highs sensational. I tried a test: with the same CD (Diana Krall: Live in Paris), I started with the Grados, then switched to the Shures. In a side-by-side comparison, the Shures sounded very thin. Not something I noticed before.
I haven't had any problem with the comfort issue some others have noted.
