| mjwise's Full Review: Sony MDR-CD60 Digital Reference Headphones |
I bought this set of headphones because I simply had no decent set to call my own and needed a set for my various portable electronics. I must admit the only comparison shopping I did was while I was at the store and the looks and apparent quality of these headphones caused a rare impulse buy for me. However, do not let the fancy "Digital Reference" title fool you: these are still budget headphones and one can only hope for so much for $20.
First, the good. I find the pads on these headphones to be comfortable, much moreso than a set that is included with a tape player or portable CD player. I have no problems wearing these for hours and at a time and since I have a rather large head, these are a comfortable fit compared to most headphones which have a tendency to pinch and give me a headache.
Second, the range is acceptable and produce a pleasing sound to my ears. Unlike others' experiences, I have not had a distortion problem with these headphones unless I turn them up to uncomfortable levels, where indeed the bass does begin to be muddled and distorts. I find the sound of these headphones to be above average for their price class and there are no distortion problems unless you listen at dangerously high volumes.
Now, the bad. First, these are really not very portable or durable headphones. They are completely plastic in construction which will break if tossed carelessly into a backpack. These can be easily broken if they are not treated with care. They are not compact in any way and are far more bulkier than most other headphones. They do not lend themselves to be easily transported around.
Second, these may LOOK like external noise-canceling headphones but they are NOT. External sounds are only muffled a little bit. This is a bit disappointing as you expect most headphones of this size to be noise-canceling, but alas these are not.
Now, I still recommend these headphones, but ONLY on the condition that you really have no more than $20 to spend on headphones. There are far better sets out there for only $50-$75 that give much better noise-canceling, are more durable, and are more portable. These headphones are good for their price class, but when compared to the whole of the headphone world, they pale pretty badly in comparison to their competitors.
