| Ataris's Full Review: Panasonic SL-S360 Personal CD Player |
Almost a year ago, I decided I needed a new portable CD player. I went into a local store and asked the clerk what he recommended for a students income. He showed me the Panasonic SL-S360 (I'll refer to it as the 360)and told me that it was one of the best portables he'd ever seen. I knew Panasonic was an outstanding brand, but I was surprised that the relative inexpensiveness of the player. I was apprehensive about it, but I trusted the clerk and bought the 360.
I was in Utah at the time, and it was a long plane ride home to New Jersey. And since I was unsure of what my new CD player could handle, I was going to to everything I could to test it.
The first thing I was skeptical about was the quality of the sound. I did not have any other new CD player to compare the sound quality to, but theres no doubt that it sounded infinitely times better than my old portable. I played with the different bass and treble settings and it sounded amazing. Every guitar chord seemed to have more life, and every drum beat seemed to be more clear and distinct.
I only had two Duracel batteries left for the plane ride, and I was secretly hoping that they would go bad halfway through the flight. But they never did. In fact, those same two batteries did not go dead until about 20 hours later. Talk about getting a lot of power for your battery.
I thought to myself: "OK, it sounds great and it lasts a long time, but how will it hold up?"
Because the player is so slender, I figured it would not hold up too well against me shaking and hitting it. Again I was wrong. With the anti-shock button turned on the 360 gives you about a smooth and crisp of a sound as you can get. I was getting frustrated that I couldn't make the CD skip so I 'pretended' to drop it on the floor. It didn't skip, the top didn't open. I was amazed. For $60 I had purchased a fantastic sounding, small, seemingly indestructible CD player.
Slowly but surely, I started to gain faith in my inexpensive wonder.
My only beef with the device is the average quality of the headphones Panasonic provided. While they are not terribly bad, my little 360 deserved much better. So I went out and bought a pair or $25 headphones, which completed the CD player.
