| bobtheguardian's Full Review: Panasonic ShockWave SL-SW870 Personal CD Player |
When you first take a look, at this CD player it looks stylish, and strong. The headphones also look stylish (maybe), as they wrap around your head. Unfortunately, the CD player is rather disappointing for the price paid.
Headphones: Either you love them or you hate them. The VMSS feature is a good gimmick, but it doesn't provide consistently good sound quality. There is a type of miniature subwoofer in the back of the headphones that vibrates on the back of your neck. Sound travels through the "arms" of the headphones, and provides low frequency bass. I found that for the most part the headphones sounded fairly good, however in some cases that was not true. For instance when listening to Propellerheads, a band known for using lots of bass (They wrote spybreak from the Matrix), the VMSS made the bass sound very muddy and unclear. Also when the bass is constantly vibrating the headphones, they can quickly become uncomfortable.
CD Player: With the outer case made of aluminum, the CD player is very durable. What isn't durable are the clips that hold it shut. The clips are made of plastic, with thin pieces of metal connecting them together. Due to the weak construction these clips can't take a lot of abuse. The rest of the CD player is well made. A rubber ring surrounds the lid to prevent moisture from entering, and there are covers for the plugs on the side when they aren't in use. The buttons also seem very sturdy. In order to change from normal, random, or resume mode one must first take out the CD as the switch is hidden underneath it, not a very convenient place. The battery cover is also underneath where the CD goes also not very convenient.
Features: The CD Players comes with all the features you would expect for such a price including: 40 sec. anti-shock, resume and random modes, Virtual Motion Sound System (VMSS) and the ability to program the order of songs.
For the price, one could by an equal quality CD player and a pair of better quality headphones, so it is not recommended.
