The new Canon Elph 2 replaces the original Elph. It is still the same rugged stainless steel body and I would hope it is as reliable and tough as the original Elph. It is slightly smaller. It is a bit thinner so the total mass is about 20% less but you would have to have them side by side to truly realize it is smaller. They have made some improvements to the original machine.
The lens is still all glass but the zoom stepping mechanism is more precise. The auto focus steps on the original were larger than on the Elph 2 so it focuses more rapidly, now, and the zoom amount is easier to control.
The on/off switch is now on the back and is designed to prevent the accidental activation that was easy to do on the original.
The flash is no longer a pop-up mechanism. It is still located in the top right hand corner of the unit but it is mounted on the face. This eliminates the mechanical mechanism to avoid a potential future wear or reliability problem and the lens distance from the flash is slightly greater, which might improve the red eye phenomenon over the original.
And, it does feature MRC (Mid Roll Change) feature. This allows you to use a specific film type for general applications and when needed, change to another film type temporarily, without wasting any film. Upon re-insertion of the partially used roll, the camera will reposition the partially used roll at the exact spot it was before rewinding and removal by the user. This is very handy. It means you can use the slower film capable of larger enlargements for general work and change to faster film for available light work or to achieve a longer flash range for indoor photography.
The price for the Elph 2 is about $249 (Wolf Camera and other discount chain stores) and $229 for the original Elph at Costco and other discount retail merchants.
Both are fine machines and would be worthy of your use. I know of no other 2X zoom unit in the APS format that features greater performance. They are so small, you can virtually take them with you everywhere. Combined with the RC-5 or RC-1 remotes ($19.95) and a small pocket mini tripod, they become really useful for vacation trips, family events or the recording of any memorable situation.
