Cons: a bit pricey, although coming down pricewise; poor red eye reduction
The Bottom Line: Easy to use, very portable--great for someone who travels a lot, a new parent who doesn't want to miss anything, or someone who always wants a camera with them.
flouswa's Full Review: Canon Elph 370Z APS Film Camera
I was none too happy this past Christmas when my Minolta Vectis 20 decided to have a nervous breakdown at a family gathering. I liked it for it's portability and kept it with me nearly all the time. When it came time to buy a replacement, I was drawn to the Canon Elph because I'd read so many good reviews about them--and let's face it, they are just darned cute!
This camera might be tiny, but there is no lack of quality to it. The stainless steel body alone screams high tech and the 23 - 69mm zoom is more than enough for most situations. What impresses me the most though is the focusing system. In the past I've been disappointed in other auto focus cameras because at times you were never quite sure if everything was lined up. With this camera I have yet to take a fuzzy picture because it wasn't aimed properly. The flash is sufficient for most situations and has several different modes to pick from. Overall, the camera is relatively easy to use with only a few bells and whistles.
I could do without the feature which allows you to have different messages printed on the backs of the photos, I've only used it when I was playing around with it to see if it really worked. The red eye reduction is a bit lacking, although that seems to be the case in most point and shoot cameras. However, it makes up for all of this with one feature not very common on cameras: Real Time Release Mode. What this does is eliminate the delay between hitting the shutter button and the shutter actually opening. It's a great feature to have when taking pictures of kids or animals and is easily turned off and on with the pressing of a few buttons. I use this a lot when taking photos of my 2 year old nephew who is constantly on the move!
The other feature that I like is the mid-roll change which permits me to switch back and forth from color to black and white as well as change film speeds easily. I also have a Canon EOS IX Lite and I can go from one camera to the other with the same roll which saves me a lot of frustration as well as using up a roll on wasted pictures just to get it out of the camera. While the APS format gets a lot of criticism from photography diehards, I personally like the ability to get photos in different formats as well as the ease of finding the right negative for a reprint.
Overall, this is a terrific little camera that I can't say enough good about. I've always been very happy with Canon equipment and I think the Elph is a camera line that will be around as long as there are APS format users. One accessory that I highly recommend to go with thiscamera is the remote control, it makes certain shots much easier and it is very responsive.
