I needed a small camera to carry around when I didn't feel like lugging around my Nikon F4 and its three lenses (which is most of the time). Because it is so easy to fit anywhere comfortably I find myself carrying it with me everywhere "just in case". As a result I have many great shots that I would have missed otherwise. I love this camera. Street price is about $99. For about $60 more you can get a zoom version (which is slightly larger). If zooming is not important to you, save some dough and go with this version. Now, for why I like this camera more than all the others I looked at.
This little Olympus is a mountain of utility in a tiny package. I like the longer shutter speed (4 seconds) which enables creative night time exposures without thinking. Believe me, this feature is great. The Riverwalk in San Antonio comes to life at night and this little camera captured all the action with just a touch of a button (and a solid place to set the camera for the long exposure). Most other point and shoots max out at one third of a second, which makes night time shooting virtually useless. It's got the necessary flexibility in flash modes (auto, red-eye reduction, fill-in, off, and night time). The night mode is fantastic. The camera's meter reads the light in the scene and then flashes to balance the subject with the background light. Many cameras do this, but with this feature, combined with the 4 second exposure (rare on point and shoots) you can get stunning night images that are only this point and shoot can deliver. The glass Olympus uses for this lens is pretty good. There is only very little difference between prints made with this camera and ones made with my professional camera. It also packs a self timer feature for when you want to be in your own pictures. This is the smallest camera that packs all the essential functionality for taking great pictures in all sorts of conditions. I don't know how Olympus does it, but I am glad they did!
This camera uses a lithium battery that lasts up to about 9 rolls (about 300 pictures) depending on how much you use the flash.
This camera doesn't have a panorama feature, but I like it that way. Panorama is a popular feature, but it really is not necessary. You can enlarge and crop any image you take. You can even request that your photofinisher print your standard negatives on 3x10 inch paper (the middle 3 inches of the image will print) to get that panoramic print. I strongly advise against paying extra money for a panorama feature.
Sneak this little camera with you everywhere you go. It's easy, it's fun, and even in low light you can get professional results!
