| Rob50rph's Full Review: Olympus IS-20 DLX QD 35mm Film Camera |
About a year ago I purchased an Olympus IS-200 which is essentially the same camera as the IS-20 DLX. I found this camera to be the best of both worlds- an easy-to-use point-and-shoot 35mm camera that can be manually operated for special circumstances.
It comes with a very sharp 28-110 zoom lens that covers just about any situation from wide angle to medium telephoto. It is relatively compact in size for a camera that has a zoom lens and a built-in flash, but cannot be slipped into a pocket or purse. As far as the flash is concerned, it is a high-power twin- flash system- very powerful, but is automatically adjusted for close-up work.
This camera can be manually operated in many ways. It can take portraits shots with aperture settings to put either the foreground or background in focus. It can be switched to "night mode" where the settings are appropriate for very dark conditions. It also has a "fast-action" mode where the shutter speed is automatically increased for photos involving sports or other fast-motion details. There are other"modes" that can be selected to control f-stops and aperture settings.
As with most point-and-shoot cameras it has automatic loading, film advance, and rewinding. Unlike manual cameras, it's impossible to take pictures unless the film is loaded correctly- the number dial and shutter-release won't work if the film isn't going thru. The camera also has many thoughtful accessories including a flip-down lens cap that cannot be lost.
My last camera was an old, heavy fully-manual 35mm with interchangeable lenses. I was looking for a camera that would take quality 35mm pictures while being easier to carry and operate. This camera does all of this and more.
