| rguy's Full Review: JVC KD-LX1 Car CD Player |
I have to admit I was a little aprehensive about buying another JVC car stereo product. I previously had a RF JVC 12 CD changer attached to my Chrysler Infinity car stereo. This unit was not solidly built as I was soon to find out (an improperly installed CD ruined this unit).
The Elkameleon KDLX1 had many of the features I was looking for and was reasonably priced compared to it's counterparts. Very cool dsplay, easily read(except for the clock), lots of flashing lights and stuff. But what sold me was the "cool" faceplate that "hides" when powered off. This simple feature was billed as a "ANTI-THEFT" system, and I can see it working if the would-be thief doesn't have the chhance to gaze too lng at your car's interior. With unit powered down, it does appear there is no "radio" installed.
When I recieved the Elkameleon KDLX1 I gave a thorough examination (it was going back if I thought it cheaply made). To my satisfaction, it was indeed a solidly built unit with very good workmanship. the unit was packed well and came with very detailed installation instructions and operationg manual.
Installation:
The installation took longer than I thought, having to remove most of the upper dash. But the KDLX1 mounted smoothly into the dash using the seperately purchased wiring harness and mounting bracket. At the same time I removed the Infinity self-powered speakers and replaced them with Sony Xplod 5.25(front) and 6X9's in the rears.
Testing the unit out:
Power up (hope the wiring is OK). Turn the key, the unit powered up I reach for the manual for tuning. Tuned in the local classis rock station, followed by the local jazz station. WOW, great sound. Next (after referring to the manual) test the CD, slapped in Steely Dan's Katy Lied(excellant test CD), extremely good sound. Next, I had a CD that other CD players had difficulty tracking, Living In Oblivion Vol. 1. No problem for the Elkameleon KDLX1, flawlessly tracked the CD and again great sound.
A few minutes with the manual and I had the time set and the local station names programmed, and customized the display variables.
This unit comes with a feature called BBE, which appears to be a extention of a loudness control. It, according to the manual compensates for phase shifting of all reproducable frequencies. Whatever it does, it seems to bring out additional richness of the sound of CD's and radio.
Cons:
Lot's of tiny multifunction buttons, you need extremely good eyesight or binoculars to see them. This is my only complaint so far. Does not have a auto attenuator when powered up.
Pros:
Very good sound, through a 16watt RMS X 4 amplifier. Enough to power the Sony Xplod's to rich, distortion free sound to very high volumes. Very good tuner, pulls in very weak stations. Did I mention the cool display?
