| djones44's Full Review: Orion Cobalt CO15D Car Speaker |
I've tried several brands of subs since I got into building systems, but I always seem to come back to Orion subs. My first sub was none other than Orion's Xtreme 15" DVC. Taking 800W RMS per voice coil @ under $150, this sub was definitely hard to beat, but I would have to agree that Orion has continued their legacy with this sub. Featuring a mere 500W :-) per voice coil, this speaker is not quite as powerful as it predecessor. (But who is actually going to push it with a 1000W amp anyway?) Actually, this lower power rating has the advantage of being able to push it with a less powerful amp. I currently have cheapo BOSS 400W amp on it and it still out pushes all my friends setups. (Including a setup w/two 15" Kickers powered by a Phoenix Gold amp)
Overall these speakers are very clear, pretty loud (they seem louder down a block than in the car -- which I like :-), and move more air (you can definitely feel it -- rattles my nose) than any other speaker I have dealt with. The downfall I could think of is that these speakers do a lot better in large enclosures, so if space is limited, you might consider another (though I wouldn't recommend it).
