| darth's Full Review: Denon AVR-3200 Receiver |
The Denon AVR 3200, in a word "rocks". This is a very good receiver, for both music and home theater. On this unit you will find many features, (as you should in receiver in the $1,000 range), but unlike some receivers these features on the Denon will actually be used. To start there is on-board Dolby Digital decoding as well as Dolby Prologic, and a plus is that there is a six-channel input for upgrading the amp to DTS or any other 5.1 surround format that may surface in the future.
The sound on this unit was awesome, music sounds great with very good bass that is tight and clean, and the highs are dynamic and precise. All this on an amp that is rated at only 85 watts per channel. Don't be fooled however this is a powerhouse. Denon uses special discreet circiutry for the amplifiers and each amp in the unit is identical for all 5 channels. And if that doesn't make any sense to you, when you pick the reciever up anyone should realize that this is a solid receiver, it's heavy and in audio stuff heavy is good.
In surround modes the Denon performed flawlessly. When listening to this amp it seems like it loves to wow you and it does, especially in Dolby Digital. The Prologic mode was excellent as well. Another mode that actually surprised me was the 5-channel music mode. Listening to music in this mode was very exciting, it had a distinct and natural sound and really made good use of the surround speakers. This again was surprising because it has been my experience on most receivers that the DSP modes such as theater, church, stadium and so on tend to have a echoe and sound downright bad. Not on the Denon, pop in a regular music CD and put the amp in 5-channel music mode and you would swear you were listening to something in a 5.1 mode, it is that good.
In all the Denon AVR 3200 will give you everything you need, it has a universal remote, s-video switching as well as composite video. Two digital inputs, 1 coaxial and 1 optical as well as a RF input for a laserdisc player. There is a on-screen menu system which is easy to use and makes setup a cinch. The only flaws on this unit is the remote which is a bit clumsy and difficult to use at first, and the receiver does not have front AV jacks or a B set of speaker connections. For the most part these flaws are slight, especially once you listen to it. I know I didn't care about not having front AV jacks after I heard the DVD of "Saving Private Ryan" on the Denon, I just said, "I'll take it"!
