| TMarsh's Full Review: Acoustic Research AR 215PS Main / Stereo Speaker |
Having decided to retire my beloved Klipsch KG-2 speakers (purchased in 1984)I decided to move to the world of compact everything (as much as practical). A very curious toddler and expensive floor standing speakers were definitely a match not made in heaven. I dreaded coming home only to find the speaker impaled by a Banjo Barney or one of his plastic golf clubs.
Hence, Acoustic Research to the rescue. I looked at and listened to no less than 10 different wall mountable speakers (ie bookshelf) and nothing in my price range (less than $200.00) came close to the AR-215PS. I am your every-day listener who enjoys a clean sound at a reasonable price.
The AR-215PS speakers are very clean sounding with crisp highs, adequate mid-ranges and solid bass (although not window shaking at the rated 65hz..my next purchase is a subwoofer to complement the AR-215PS). The emphasis here is on a CLEAN sound, no popping, hissing or dull thuds despite the limited lower frequencies. In addition to sounding great, the quality of the speakers is nothing short of outstanding. VERY solid, no noticeable screws or rough edges, no veneer to peel off six months down the road. I can't emphasize enough the noticeable quality and workmanship that went into these speakers.
The placement of my speakers is on the wall (corners), 7 feet off the floor, facing towards the center of the room. The room is 13'x20' and the speakers sound very good, although I'm pushing the upper area I'd recommend for the speaker. A smaller room or enclosed office would probably do the speakers more justice.
Price? I purchased my AR speakers online and thought they were a real steal at a penny pinching $85.00 (with shipping). The list was $99.00 (typical online price after several comparisons) and I took advantage of a %20 discount for being a first time buyer at the merchant I selected. Locally (central Virginia) the prices ranged from $110.00 to $120.00, with neither local brick and mortar merchant willing to match the online prices.
