| randys1234's Full Review: JVC XV-501 DVD Player |
We have had our XV-501BK since 11/97. We bought it because we absolutely love our JVC S-VHS HR3600U player, and we hoped this DVD player would perform just as well as our S-VHS! Unfortunately, that was not the case.
As with the other reviews listed, the lockup issue is the biggest irritant that my wife and I have experienced with this DVD player. The included features are great, but what good are they if you are constantly being bothered by the player locking up, or not even being able to read certain DVDs at all?
"Cruel Intentions" is one movie that locks up, and then I am forced to reset it by going through all sorts of sequences provided to me by the JVC service center (fortunately, that movie was a rental, not a purchased DVD). I have even had several occasions that after inserting a DVD, the player will spin the DVD, then eject it back out (Ultimate DVD-Silver & Gold versions are examples).
The player will also lock up, for no reason, at the DVD's main menu, forcing us to unplug the player then plug it back in. This happens very randomly, and is not consistent with specific DVDs.
There is a bright side to this tale, however. The audio and visual output of the player is quite good, in my opinion, for a DVD player in this price range.
Our XV-501BK will most likely make its way to the master or guest room in due time. Its replacement will not be another JVC DVD player...
UPDATE-12/26/2000: I just received "Scary Movie" for Xmas, and was very unhappy to find that after placing the disc in the tray and closing it, the JVC player could not read the disc and rejected it (automatically opening the tray). Ba-humbug.
