Pros: Great picture quality. Does nice double-duty as audio CD player.
Cons: It IS slow. Why can't Nak make an illuminated remote?
The Bottom Line: Beautiful-looking, great-performing DVD player. Slow response times and lack of illuminated remote prevent an entirely perfect review.

| buddywally's Full Review: Nakamichi DVD-10S Player |
Just thought I'd chime in on a product that I spent alot of time on Epinions researching about 1 year ago.
To give you a brief rundown, I was looking for a DVD player to mate with my Nakamichi AV-10 receiver (which I also love), that would do double-duty as a DVD/surround sound player as well as serving as the primary CD/player for our living room.
Just to give you a reference point.
My previous experience had been with an Adcom CD player and 60W/channel amplifier system that I'd owned for 8 years (and I'm still near suicidal about letting either of them go).
I've tended to become less of a true 'Audiophile' than I have in years past and I must admit that I have never had anything remotely approaching an acoustically neutral (or even acceptable, really) room in which to listen to my stereo.
So with all this in mind.
This DVD player rocks! Movie playback is spectacular, and I haven't seen anything better since I bought it back in May/00 (and I'm always looking). Lately, it has had a tendency to halt/stagger right smack-dab in the middle of movies, but in each instance could be traced to deep scratches or dust on the DVD surface (my fault, I know). Audio quality does not seem to be nearly as 'open' as was the case with the Adcom, but then again, I don't sit down and listen to CD's straight through as often as I once did. Overall I would rate the audio quality as 'Excellent'.
I remember being worried last year about whether "The Matrix" would play in the DVD-10, as I had read that many people were having trouble with it. No need to worry, we watch portions of the movie every week without problems (to date).
The player response does tend to be on the slow side, much slower than I had expected. Quality was much higher on my list than response, and I seem to have adjusted well. The lack of an illuminated remote was a real bummer at first, but now I have the buttons memorized this isn't such a problem either.
DTS is simply awesome, and worth the money, I don't care what anybody says. "Dances With Wolves" is the only DTS title that I own, but damn if that alone ain't worth getting DTS capability.
All-in-all, over the past eight months my DVD-10 has given me uninterrupted, excellent service, & I don't regret a single penny.
ps- I think you can probably get the DVD-10 for $679, seemed to be about the dealer's comfort-zone when I bought mine. May be less now, I haven't checked. $799 is way too much.
