| lpret's Full Review: Sharp MD-MS702 Personal MiniDisc Player |
I was looking for a portable music device and I couldn't decide on either an MP3 player or a CDplayer. When I traveled to Japan I saw all these people with minidisc players and I fell in love. I hurried home and bought this Sharp and was amazed by it's snazzy look. However, that's about as far as my attraction has become.
Now, to be fair, I have enjoyed the recording ability of the recorder; it is an easy. on-the-fly recording option that has helped my band to record our own album. BUT, there is nothing that sets it apart from the rest. Other MD recorders can do the same thing with a much better case.
Which brings me to the second point, the MS702 has some of the most unintuitive controls I have ever touched on a music player. The 'next track'/'last track' buttons are tiny and are placed next to the enter button and sync button. Do you have any idea why these are placed next to each other? They are not related in any way and it makes for a confusing layout. Also, the 'next track'/'last track' buttons protrude from the wired remote and the 'next track' button on mine has broken off. I keep thinking back to the days of the Sony Walkmans that had the controls placed neatly and solidly.
The title of this "essay" becomes literal at this point. Little screws line the case of the MD player, and of the seven on the player, 3 of them have fallen out on mine. I am not Magneto from X-men - I don't pull metal off of appliances - but they have disappeared from sight. I have looked in hardware stores for these screws and have had no success. So I called Sharp-USA and asked them about getting the screws from them. I was told to send it in, and oh, by the way, it will cost you 50 bucks. FIFTY BUCKS?!?!?! You can buy a decent CD player for that price.
Frankly, MiniDisc is a good idea, but this player is not.
I would recommend the Sharp MD MS-702 to someone whom you hate very much.
