| QuickReview's Full Review: RCA Lyra RD2204 (64 MB) MP3 Player |
Summary
Don't get me wrong; the Lyra is a capable MP3 player. The only problem is, that's it. There's nothing that sets this player apart from all the rest. Well okay, there's two differences, it's bigger than most other MP3 players out there. I mean, it's not huge or anything, but in my opinion, the whole idea behind MP3 is portability and the RCA Lyra just isn't microscopic enough. And secondly, the price. For this kind of dough I'd expect more bells and whistles.
THE SKINNY
What I like about it...
1.) Big backlit LCD screen which shows six tracks at once including artist name, song listing and several unit functions.
2.) Easy to use buttons. None of those goofy, tiny little buttons here. These buttons make sense and work well.
3.) LOUD! This baby cranks and the equalizer works better than most other players I've tried.
What I hate about it...
1.) So for $200 you'd expect some cool new feature right? Wrong. Nothing to write home about on this unit.
2.) Built-in encryption scheme that mates each MP3 track with a particular CompactFlash card. Thus, you need to use the included RealJukebox software to load songs into the CompactFlash drive. When playing your tracks, you have to wait about 5 seconds before the songs starts playing because of the encryption thing. Lame.
BOTTOM LINE
Although the Lyra does what it's supposed to do in an efficient manner, the $200 price tag does not give you any cool extras and the unit is just too big. The built-in encryption that mates songs with a particular Compactflash card causes to end of annoyance. Skip this player and get a cheaper, cooler, smaller one from someone else.
