| claire8346's Full Review: Kendall Jackson Chardonnay Vintner's Reserve 1998 |
Kendall Jackson Chardonnay is my comfort wine -- a wine that I drink when I'm "drinking alone" and a wine that makes a bad day go away. After a stressful day at the office, a near-miss traffic accident or a bout of anxiety, you might find me in the local H.E.B. checking the refrigerator section for an already chilled bottle of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. However, I would not order a bottle with a meal.
The first sip of Kendall Jackson tastes like pears, apples and vanilla. These fruity soft aromas balance out what would otherwise be a more bold taste due to KJ's relatively high alcohol level. The orchard tastes also balance the oak, giving Kendall Jackson a quality of being bold yet soft and quite frankly, uncomplicated. While the first sip will dance in your mouth a bit, the rest of the glass will taste more balanced with smooth pear and vanilla flavor finish.
A chilled glass of Kendall Jackson goes well with salty snacks (but doesn't everything?) and plain chicken or fish. This might explain why it's so popular at Thanksgiving, as it tastes good with plain old turkey. It would probably taste okay with a rather bland cream sauce too, but it does not go well with any sort of spicy or herb cream sauce. Also, forget drinking it with beef, or tomato sauce. When drunk with pizza. KJ Chardonnay tastes like heavy beer. This one is best sipped at cocktail time with peanuts, pretzels or chips.
Kendall Jackson calls itself "America's Favorite Chardonnay" and it probably is. It's got all the wine qualities many American wine drinkers like -- high alcohol, fruit, not too sweet but not too dry and a comforting aroma. This is definitely a good house Chardonnay.
