USAA banking services are great because they are and cheap. For the price, you do have to give up some of the conveniences of using your local bank- including not being able to visit a teller (but who does this anymore?), and having to make all deposits (other than direct deposits) through the mail.
1.No minimums. You need $50 to open an account, but you can keep any amount in there with no monthly fee. They also pay interest on a checking account regardless of the balance. Purchases made with your check card also get a small rebate. (.5% or so).
2.Deposits. This is a slight negative because it will not arrive at USAA for at least a few days, but they do provide you with as many envelopes as you like, and they pick up the postage.
3.ATM fees. There aren't any! And when a bank has the nerve to charge you for using their ATM machine, USAA refunds this amount to you, up to about 6 transactions per month, up to about $15. I say about because they set guidelines, but I have exceeded them many times, and they still refund the full amount. The "no ATM fee thing" is the most money quality about USAA.
4.Customer Service: Their customer service is great. Representatives are attentive and friendly, and they do not transfer you to another department blindly. The rep will stay on the phone with you and explain your situation to the next rep. You also have the option of e-mailing a question/complaint/problem. I have found relatively quick turnaround with this method of customer service. An e-mail sent in the afternoon usually has a response in my inbox the next morning.
5. Easy to use services: Of course you can use their web service, which has about average speed, but is rather easy to use. They have a page that has an aggregation of all of your accounts with their balances. You can view them all at once and see transaction histories, make necessary transfers, etc. They also have 'touchline', which is a touch tone phone service where you can check balances, transfer funds, etc.
Bottom line: if you don't mind mailing in your deposits and not being able to visit the local branch, USAA offers great service at a great price.
