| benminer's Full Review: CompuBank |
I stated my CompuBank account because they had a promotion with Cybergold to give new account holders $50. They also give you 1200 Clickmiles, and I used them to get a $20 gift certificate to Olive Garden. The sign-up process was fairly easy, and I got my checks and debit card with 10 days. The debit card, or at least the one I got, is very ugly, so if you are the type of person who likes to only carry around pretty plastic in your wallet then CompuBank is not for you. However it does work everywhere I have tried it, and I’ve never had any problems.
CompuBank’s motto is “real-time banking online”, and boy are they ever. Your ATM deposits are gone really fast! I have literally gone to Wawa (a 7/11 type store for those of you not on the East Coast), withdrew $60, and then called the bank-by-phone 3 MINUTES later and my money is gone. CompuBank does reimburse you for up to 4 ATM fees a month, but most Wawa’s are free anyway so I’ve never benefited much from that. I did have one store refuse my check because the clerk didn’t recognize the bank and it was out of state, but instances like that are few and far between.
CompuBank’s rates are fairly competitive among other Net Banks. They offer a free no-interest checking for poor people like me who don’t always have more than $1000 in their account, and a interest earning account if you keep at least $1000 in there all the time. Their web site is fast, easy to use, and customer service is good (either by phone or email). One annoying aspect of their bill paying system is that sometimes it can take up to 5 days for a new payee you just added to go from “pending” to “available”. I guess they check to see if it can be paid electronically. Also if you change the payee nickname it goes back into “pending”, which is REALLY annoying. However the bills are paid and I have never had a problem with my payment being received. You can send free wire transfers, which is not something I do much, but I’m sure if I did I would appreciate it.
Overall I have been satisfied with my CompuBank experience, so they earn a solid 4 out of 5. I am currently switching to First Internet Bank of Indiana, because they offer 5% interesting on checking with no minimum balance, so in a month or so I will have a review of them.
