KristenA's Full Review: Harvest Moon for Game Boy Color
I never thought I'd like a game about farming!
In Harvest Moon for the Game Boy Color, you inherit a farm and you must make it profitable. Since the farm has been neglected, the first thing you must do is clean up the weeds, rocks, and stumps. Then you plow the land and plant some crops. In a few days you'll have vegetables you can sell.
As you make more money, you can buy livestock. The chickens give you eggs you can sell for even more money. The cows produce milk you can sell. Later in the game you can make cheese or butter with the milk and sell it for even more money.
A single day in the game goes by quickly, and you must plan your time carefully. Each season lasts 30 days, and then you must plant new crops for the next season. At the end of the year, you'll receive certain bonuses depending on how well you've done.
There are plenty of surprises and bonuses throughout the first two years. You gain new tools, and raising your first chicken or cow is always an exciting event! However, after the first two years, I thought the game became a little too repetitive. You wake up, water and pick your crops, feed your livestock, maybe go to town, and then back to bed. I just wish they had added more bonuses throughout the game.
The graphics are pretty good! Cows look like cows, and chickens look like chickens. Nightfall and the change of seasons look pretty impressive. The sound is also good. I like the rain and thunderstorms. They sound real, and are actually kind of relaxing.
This is such a unique game! And if you're looking for a fun non-violent game for your kids or yourself, then I highly recommend Harvest Moon.
