| Carazariah's Full Review: Beetle Adventure Racing for Nintendo 64 |
An adventure indeed.
The game catches me off guard every time I put it into the N64 console. I think it's the funky music coming out of my speakers or maybe it's because I turn my stereo onto Video in and put the volume on 20 or so. Anyway the music definitely wakes you up and sounds pretty outstanding for the poor audio qualities of the N64. The music reminds me of that V/W Beetle commercial where the two guys are driving along and they see that couch then they pick it up and load it into their V/W. A few miles later they start smelling and they look back and you see them unloading the stinking couch. The title proclaims loudly Welcome to Beetle Adventure Racing!
Menu: The game menu is easy enough to figure out you have the regular race and then multi-player options. The game shines in racing physics just remember that all you have for opponents are those shiny new Beetle's in differing colors all around you. The game progresses with interesting tracks and great, no, no. . . "Stunning" visuals for a console some of the best ever for the N64. The clouds and sky are crisp to the horizon. . . Fog? ? ? What Fog? The waterfalls on the 3rd track are superb! Oh and the best thing about the game are the great shortcuts and power-ups throughout the single player race! Don't forget to explore the country side you never know what your going to find.
Skill: This game starts out easy the first three tracks are fairly simple to beat. But after that it's going to take some skill to inch up those scale ladders!
Appeal: The game definitely has a charm about it I don't know if it's the darn beetles or the fact that the game just plays so smooth or the fact that you can get lost in the visuals on those tracks. . . Maybe it's all three of those.
Real Time Damage: Well their ain't none of that unless you want to count your Beetle splintering into a thousand pieces when you smash it at 100 mph into a wall or off the cliff! Oh well I guess I'd rather have a smooth playing game than real time damage. . .
Multi-Player: Wow now this rocks you can race up to four people at a time or you can play Beetle Battle 'Now that really heats up the fun' You and your buddies go at each other to collect all 7 or 8 colored "Lady Bugs" on the track the first one to collect all the Bugs and get back to the Start Wins! Oh yeah you have great power ups too like Rockets, Invincibility, and Speed boost to get you where your going. Don't forget to blast your opponent they lose a "Lady Bug" every time their little Beetle splinters into a thousand pieces!
This game has lots of appeal and makes me come back all the time!
It's a definite Recommended and I'd rate it a 9.3 out of 10!
