Pros: Great story, funny dialog, easy to pick up and play.

| geewilcox's Full Review: Goemon's Great Adventure for Nintendo 64 |
Goemon's Great Adventure is one of those games that probably won't sell a ton of copies here in the States, but deserves a look, if not an outright purchase, due to the sheer amount of fun it hold for one or two players.
The latest in a long series of Goemon games (but only the third released here), the game is unabashedly Japanese in tone, and may confuse some gamers not used to some of the odd humor. But a level or two into the game will hook you, and you'll want to grab a friend, as the game has a sweet two-player mode, as well.
The story this time out is weird, to say the least- an inventor creates a "ghost return machine", in order to revive gorgeous dead celebrities, like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, but his gadget is stolen by an "evil nun", who instead uses it to bring forth the head of the underworld, in order to prove her love! This also results in hordes of cute, but deadly ghosts also being released, and as Goemon, you have to put an end to all this! Taken in another direction, this is the stuff of a great horror game or film, but here, everything is played for laughs, and it works!
The game is divided into stages, featuring great graphics and music, and gameplay reminiscent of old Nintendo games, like Conquest of the Crystal Palace, with a dash of Mario 64 thrown in. The game is played like a side scroller, but with some 3D elements, such as rotating backgrounds. You have 2 characters to choose from initially, and 2 others can be found in your travels, each one has his or her own special weapons and attacks to use against the assorted enemies. As I said earlier, the game can be played as a one or two-player adventure, and this makes a big difference.
In the one player game, you take care of all the adventuring yourself, while the two-player mode has both persons teaming up to defeat the enemies. You can piggyback atop another, which adds a bigger challenge- one player runs and jumps, the other attacks- making this a game of communication as well as concentration. Also, in the Impact stages, the one-player game has you controlling a huge clockwork robot, called Impact, as he teams up with his female counterpart, Miss Impact, to fight bosses. You toss a baton to her, and the camera switches to her viewpoint, as you assume control of her. In the 2-player mode, each player controls a separate Impact (player 2 is Miss Impact), and again, communication is key, when that baton is about to be tossed!
This is an all-around blast of a game, and the only real drawback is in the length department- you can expect to finish it in about 20-30 hours, if you complete all the subquests and minigames (which are great fun, by the way!) If you're looking for a really great, underrated gem, you can do yourself a favor and pick this game up- you won't be disappointed!
