Pros: Some new features, almost decent AI!, more strategy than meets the eye... great party game!
Cons: Largely similar, and most minigames just aren't real decisive now.

| Wavelength's Full Review: Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64 |
It's not quite as refreshing as the old Mario Party, but it's more polished. The AI got smarter, and the boards trickier. But at heart, it's the same game, and gets old quicker than one might think.
The creators did make a worthy effort to spice up an already great game. Just the idea of a virtual board game where true skill is needed to win is just great. New features include Battle minigames, Item minigames, costumes, Baby Bowser on all boards, Duel minigames, "Koopa Bank", AI with actual brains :), lots of new or revised minigames, and endings. There's more, but the rest are not really important.
While single player mode is more fun than the original because the AI is a little smarter this time around, multiplayer loses it's competitive edge a little, thanks to a few very decisive minigames that are almost all luck, and the fact that there are hardly any "Bonus games" (games where there's no real winner-- everyone gets the load of coins they collected and there's no 10 coin winner, if you've played Cast Aways or Deep Sea Divers, you know what I'm talking about.) this time around. Still, it isn't called Mario Party (2) for no reason-- this game could still be the life of many a party.
The graphics aren't great but they portray everything perfectly and are a bit humorous. The sounds are like the graphics-- you'll know what's happening and they can cause a pretty good laugh once in a while. Let me take this opportunity to commend the wonderful controls which do what you want them to do, but can intentionally be made tricky sometimes, like in the Magnet Carta.
Overall, you should definitely get this game if you don't own the first Mario party. If you do, the items and some of the other new features might be enough to make you buy it, but it's at your discretion: your new Mario Party 2 will be a fun twist, but it will all be the same Mario Party that we all know and love (or hate).
