| Jaywa's Full Review: Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64 |
I loved Mario Party 1 even though I didn’t get to play it very much. Upon hearing Mario Party 2 was being released, I figured that it would be just as fun and crazy as the first one. Luckily, I was right. This game is a riot to play. It is very fun.
Gameplay
The game itself is set up like a board game. On the “board,” there are spaces that do various things, such as: Gain/lose coins, compete for an item(to do various things), battle other players, and other bonus to help or hurt you and your opponents in your main goal: Collecting as many Stars as you can.
You are able to choose from six different character that have been related to Mario’s games in one way or another, from past or present. You can be Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Peach, and Wario. None of them have advantages or disadvantages over another; just purely preference. Of course, what Mario game would be complete without Bowser? On the game board, there are a few “Bowser Spaces” where nine times out of ten, you and/or you opponents are going to get busted up for some coins or another bad thing. So Bowser hasn’t changed any, just one big bad guy.
There are also six different boards to choose from. A few examples are Pirate Land, Western Land, and Space Land. Each board ranges from a one to three Star difficulty. It is kind of funny to see that each of the characters dress up to match the land. In Space Land, each character puts on a space outfit. What was surprising nice about the stages is that they all have very different layouts and were designed with much thought put into them.
The most fun part of Mario Party 2 are the mini-games. This is where 98% of the fun is. These are games where it is either everyone for themselves, 3 versus 1, or teams of 2 versus 2. I am not quite sure how many mini-games there are, but believe me, there a quite a few. These games will make even the least competitive person competitive! You get so wrapped up in trying to win, it’s funny seeing what people will do to win and prevent losing.
I really recommend playing this game with at least one other person. Playing alone, you don’t get to share the fun with anyone. I feel at least two players is the minimum, with four players promising huge amounts of fun.
The replay value on Mario Party 2, on a scale of one to ten is a crazy 11! There are too many variables in this game to make it monotonous. Never will you play the same game twice. You and your friends will have so much fun playing this game over and over again.
One great thing about this game is that there is no violence in it. Many parents will like that. There is only competition involved. All ages can and will have fun playing this game.
Graphics and Music
The graphics involved suit this game just fine. They are nothing extraordinary, but nothing terrible. The game board’s have a few 3D objects on them, but not many. The 3D mini-games allow for a variety of games, such as racing in go carts, pushing each other off of ledges, and even a game that is similar to Simon Says.
Each game board has music that is closely related to the theme. For example, Western Land has country music that features a guitar. They just fit nicely.
Overall
This game strongly resembles Mario Party 1. You can view this game as an addition to it. All it does is give the gamer more game boards to choose from and a few more features. The fun factor, replayability, and addictiveness of this game makes it a sure classic.
