Pros: The best multi-player game out there. Huge replay value. Fun mini games.
Cons: Once again, pretty poor single-player mode.

| zackeriah's Full Review: Mario Party 2 for Nintendo 64 |
Some may have gotten the impression in my original Mario Party review that I didn't like the game. Well, if you think this, you are wrong. I had a lot of fun with Mario Party, and if it weren't for the release of this sequel, I would have probably have given it four stars. But I just can't, in good conscience, recommend the original to anyone when there's a far superior sequel out there.
Nintendo knows what gamers want: Fun. It's a shame that most gamers don't realize this, because Nintendo, simply put, makes the best games. What Nintendo has basically done is removed all the boring stuff from the original, left the good stuff, and added more good stuff. To be honest, the only mini game I don't like is Bombs Away because it requires absolutely no skill, and for some reason my N64 constantly picks it for me (grrrr).
I'm not going to bore you again and explain what the game is like, I mean, it plays almost exactly like the original. It's still your standard board game-like game-play, but there's now more to it. There are more hazards on the board, more different kinds of spaces, more interaction, and more FUN.
It's a good thing Nintendo decided to keep classic mini games like Bumper Balls (where all four players are on spinning balls and try to ram each other off the platform) and Face Lift (Where you disfigure a face to try to match an example face given to you before the mini game starts). But even if they hadn't included these, it wouldn't have been a total loss. We still have great new mini games like Sneak 'n' Snore and Honeycomb Havoc.
Once again, Nintendo has failed to realize that many console game players don't play with others. The difficulty settings help a little though. The normal setting provides a decent computer AL that's not too hard and not too easy, but it's still nothing compared to playing with friends. Here's hoping that Mario Party 3 for Dolphin has some sort of online gaming option. Still, it's not fair to mark Mario Party 2's overall score down when the multi-player mode (the reason anyone should play this game, hence the name PARTY) is so darn good.
In closing, it is not an overstatement to call Mario Party 2 the most fun game ever made. No, it's not the most engrossing, complex, or action packed game available on the market, but if it's pure multi-player fun you're after, you absolutely cannot make a better investment than with this gem of a game.
