moosechops's Full Review: Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64
For all you people who wrote a complaint about my original review for this game, this one's for you.
Super Smash Brothers is a fighting game, yes, but not quite the fighting games that everyone is used to. I was suprised at how captivated by this game I became. There is a menu that shows how many times you have fought with a certain character, and when I added them all up, I realized that I had fought well over a thousand fights within a month. Sad, huh?
Anyway, the graphics in this game are a slick mixture of 2D and 3D. The stages themselves are 3D, but the backgrounds and characters are 2D. These graphics, are simple yet satisfying. The stages are nothing spectacular, but not hard on the eyes either.
The sound is just your usual cutesy sound effects, from Pikachu's rat call or whatever it is, to Mario yelling "yahoo!" when he slings someone off the stage. It's nothing great, but fun anyway.
The control is easy to pick up and learn, with no complicated moves or anything to really master. I think that this was done to make it easier for little kids to play, which is this game's target audience, as you can tell from them putting Pokemon characters in it.
The gameplay is nothing really innovative, but great anyway. Basically, you play as one of the main characters (Mario, Samus from Metroid, Kirby from Kirby's Dream Land, Starfox, Link from the Legend of Zelda, Pikachu from all the Pokemon games, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi from the Mario games), and you try to beat your opponents until they are weak enough to knock off the stage. The magic of this game is in the four player battles. These are about as fun as it gets. The game's main flaw is its camera angles. Sometimes the camera likes to follow the characters flying off the stage until the one's till fighting become invisible, creating an occasional obnoxious problem and allwoing your opponent to hit you while you can't see. But that's a problem you can learn to ignore given time.
Basically, this game is one of my favorite titles for the 64 and I recommend it highly.
Parents: this game in a fighting game, but there is no blood and all the violence is cartoonish and harmless. No one really dies in this game.
