Pros: Variety of planes, options, gameplay, low system requirements
Cons: Requires lots of knowledge, not real enough (since 2000)
The Bottom Line: Bit difficult, but lots of fun. There are better ones out there, but only since 2000 and the introduction of 3D. Still great after 4 years!
trasjman's Full Review: Advanced Tactical Fighters Gold for Windows
Advanced Tactical Fighters was a great sim for it's time. I bought it 4 years ago and it looked great. I still does, now I can play it on the highest resolution. But you don't need 3Dfx or a pentium III to fully enjoy this game. I only have a pentium II 333 without a 3D-videocard and it plays at optimum level.
It's real easy to start flying. You choose for a quick mission, choose your plane and start flying. You can also look in the encyclopedia and read up on some of the airframes before you test-fly one. The game also includes a couple of complete tours of duty. These are great fun if you have developed some skill and want a challenge. In-flight you can chance a number of things involving your skill. If you want easy targeting, that can be arranged. If you want unlimited fuel and ammo, no problem. The possibilities are numerous.
One of the drawbacks is that you need a considerable amount of knowledge on the subject to start killing the bogies. What missile to use in close range, what does "active radar" mean and so on. Once you have mastered this (easy for the Discovery Channel viewers) the game is great. But the knowledge comes back. If you have acquired too much, you notice that some characteristics of the planes and weapons are completely bogus. But still, it's a great sim. Now, it's even available greater. Jane's Fighters Anthology contains ATF and Navy Fighters. You can fly more planes, defeat more enemies and fly more missions and tours.
