They say if you have been in combat long enough you develop a 1,000 yard stare. That is the kill zone. You can kill or be killed at that distance. This combat simulation brings that point across more than any other computer game. In fact, this game is used to train US Army elite forces.
Because of amazing voxel 3D graphics, this first person shooter can come out of the enclosed hallways and out into the open. You can see for vast distances as well as clear rooms and hallways. If you have chosen an appropriate scoped sniper weapon, you can pick off enemies at a distance. Or if the situation arises you can get close and use a silenced MP5, grenades, or a squad machine gun. An assault rifle like the Steyr AUG is a good all around weapon. With a limited number of pre-ban Steyr AUG's fetching up to $6,000 this is as close most of us will get to firing one.
The AI is very good. Enemy soldiers will react differently to you according to how well you keep your head down, use cover, use suppressed weapons, and use the element of surprise. The enemy can close in on you and flank you so you have to be constantly aware. Your computer controlled team members are not always so smart. They will often rush headlong into an ambush. It is frustrating to play some of the scenarios and not be able to prevent your team members from getting shot to bits. But as long as you survive, the mission can continue.
The left hand is used to control movement and weapon selection with the keyboard, the right hand is used to aim and fire weapons with the mouse. Control is very intuitive. Replay value is excellent and can keep you up until 2 or 3 in the morning.
Targeting is a little generous. If an enemy is hiding behind a truck, you can go prone and shoot him in the ankle. In real life this might be incapacitating, but in this game it is fatal. You can also be killed with one shot so you must move carefully. Bullets can penetrate some materials like tents and twigs and still be lethal. You have to account for hold over for long shots. Or you can dial in your scope, but who has the time when the lead is flying!
This game can be a little gory. When the enemy is hit there is a red mist with chunks and wall splattering. The enemy often dies with agonizing moans or a sickening gurgling noise. You have the option of turning the blood off. Perhaps the most objectionable aspect of the game is that the enemies have foreign accents: Arab, Mexican, Slav, etc. Not very ethnic friendly; but then again, neither are most of our military policies. I get the feeling that like many fun things, games like this might someday be outlawed. Play them now while you have the choice.
