Cons: New handling takes a bit getting used to and nothing new except going outside.
The Bottom Line: Get it only if you have played the original descent or
if you would like a gaming experience like none other.
Not to mention it's cheap in retail, buy it.
Descent 1 had all the potential a game could offer with a
360 degree environment and killer first action gameplay.
Descent 2 reached some of the potential without changing
the game engine and adding a flare(no pun intended) here and there for effect.
Descent 3...well, I can't say that it has reached it's
ultimate potential.
The new engine is flashy, graphical wise, but the overall
handling was a bit odd for me. I'm a keyboard kind of guy
with this game (most people don't believe that I play
better without a joystick) and when I hopped into my pyro with a set of quad lasers ready to go my reticle hopped
all over the place. I was used to the sluggish movements
of the vehicle in the predecessors and was not expecting
this challenge of controlling a quick left or right with the
tap of the controls.
I swore to never use a jokestick (excuse me) for the series,
but I tried it and to my surprise I actually enjoyed it. It only makes sense that a pilot learn how to use one, right?
Aside the controls, the gameplay is fair. Shooting robots
with laser-like projectiles and the new fancy guns was fun
...for a while. The level design went up a notch, but that
thrill soon faded. I'm kind of glad that this game didn't
follow the way of Freespace, but stayed in the traditional
way of descenting.
Since this game is relatively cheap now ($20 dollars or less with the Mercenaries addon). I would definitely
recommend this to any hardcore Descenter for a new
challenge.
For the new Descenter, expect to be learning some new skills the hard way.
