Seanster's Full Review: Half-Life: Opposing Force (Add on) for Windows
Much has been said about this game. I personally believe that it is one of the best games ever made. There is very little wrong with it, with the possible exception of the extreme addiction that comes from playing it.
Half-Life was marked for greatness more than six months before it was released. People wondered whether the claims that it was going to revolutionize gaming were true, or whether it was going to be another Quake clone with fancy graphics. Well, everybody knows what happened.
Half-Life has so many things done right that it can't be described really accurately other than a really well-done first-person action movie. I say movie because of the cinematic style appearance it takes on. Audio and visual cues keep you at the edge of your seat in suspense. It's funny, it's creepy, it's strange, and it's sickening: all the good components of a movie. I was actually disappointed when I beat the game. But, I wasn't let down; on the contrary, I was very pleased. Every single aspect of the game is interesting and fits together as a whole, from the creatures, to the locale, and even to the interactions between the characters.
Half-Life uses a modification of the Quake II engine. This does wonders for the graphics without requiring a supercomputer to run it. It supports Direct3D, OpenGL, and Software rendering modes, so most people with a decent system can run it. The sound, a neglected aspect in many games, is superb. The CD audio adds greatly to the "experience".
The game is fun and incredibly addictive.
Many actions games have been rightly blasted for not having decent single-player gaming. Others have been called "incomplete" because of lousy multiplayer action. Half-Life solves these problems. Both the single player and the multi-player games are very, very well-done. This game will be a model for many action games for years to come.
Other game companies will certainly try to mimic Half-Life. Good luck. This game is, without a doubt, a revolutionary product of hard work and ingenuity. Because you don't play Half-Life, you don't experience Half-Life, you live it.
