Gomer808's Full Review: Chrono Cross for PlayStation 1
I think Chrono Cross is overrated as a good follow-up to Chrono Trigger. Don't get me wrong! I loved the game, but it just didn't seem to meet all of what I'd think it would be.
First of all, the story. Ok, Chrono Cross SHINES in this category. I take that back, it blinding how good the story is. A well set plot that develops bit by bit as the game progresses, always keeping the player wondering what's going to happen next. There were many unpredictable events that occured, and for a seasoned RPG gamer, coming across unpredictable story lines are rare. For exampl...nah, I'm not going to ruin it! One thing really good about the story is that the player would make a decision and wonder later what would happen if he or she chose the alternative. And yes, choosing the other decision can make an impact on your game. And yes, decisions are VERY common in the world of Chrono Cross.
Story - 10/10
The graphics are well done. I can't say too much more. Only gripe is that the artwork for the lower level spells weren't that creative. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one who loves 10 minute, pure eye candy, summoning spells, but the spells in Chrono Cross could have been better looking. No matter, didn't affect the Story or Gameplay.
Graphics - 9/10
The gameplay has its pros and cons. The world of Chrono Cross is pseudo nonlinear in that you aren't forced to go immediately to the next destination, but can explore and move on with the story when they want. The player is usually free to explore what he or she can. Some people like this, some people don't. Me? Oh I like it! It just added more freedom. The con of gameplay is the fighting....oh man... First of all, fights took forever. Most of the time was taken up by the characters physically slashing or smashing. There is an item that you get later on that lets the player speed up time(including battles), but that isn't until you beat it one time through. Another con about the battle system is that it reverted to the system similar to most Squaresoft games where position didn't matter. In the original Chrono Trigger, the position of the characters in battle made a difference because of the spells and abilities were used in lines or small areas. This was a horrible change and a goodbye to a great battle system. The second con, in my opinion, is the size of the world. It seemed a bit too small compared to Chrono Trigger. There didn't seem to be that many places to go or to search. Adding to the small world, is that there were only two. That isn't so bad, because having two worlds was essential to the story, but I expected multiple worlds or times, like in Chrono Trigger. Other than that, I think Chrono Cross was pretty good in gameplay.
Gameplay - 6/10
The music and sound effects were very very good. At times, it was reminiscent of Chrono Trigger and I found that just absolutely delightful.
Music - 10/10
Overall, Chrono Cross is a good game, just needed some more in my opinion. The change in the battle system was a gigantic let down. But the story was captivating and original.
