leegarson's Full Review: NBA Live 99 for PlayStation 1
NBA Live '99 was a good basketball game, last year. It had killer graphics and great gameplay...LAST year. I have tried to play NBA Live '99 for a while now, but something keeps me from getting hooked. Is it the lack of tight control? Or maybe the fact that all SG (shooting guards) shoot 30 times and are the leading scorers almost EVERY game? Or maybe it's the lack of easy operation through all the menus?
Don't get me wrong, once you get into NBA Live '99, it is fun. Very fun, in fact. The players exact faces are digitally mapped onto their cyber selfs. You can easily tell the difference between Allen Iverson and Shawn Bradley. Their abilities are similar to real-life.
Another great feature is the career mode. Track yearly stats. The only con to a career mode is the lack of development through younger players. In order for a game to try to be a simulation, career mode with changing ratings for players is a MUST. Players change in real life, so why not in cyber-life.
Also, no rookies from 1998 are in this game, because of the lockout. To include them, it's easy. Just input all their information into the create-a-player option and you're all set. Also, there is no Michael Jordan. There is a player named PLAYER who has the attributes of a Michael Jordan.
So, if you are looking for a cheap decent basketball game right now, buy this one. If you have a little extra dough, go with NBA 2K for Sega DreamCast or the upgrade to 1999, NBA Live 2000.
