dmarusz's Full Review: Simcity 2000 for PlayStation 1
Who would have thought to make a game out of building a city? Moreover, people will actually buy it and play it for hours? This isn't some trick a parent is trying to pull over us, is it?
No, it is not. Maxis may want to educate, but their intent was based on fun. I have to admit, this unique game has a lot of pluses. It's different, smart, easy to learn and can enthrall you upon the onset. Building a city is relatively believable where you have to tax to make money, build to grow and you have to constantly satiate your citizens. I applaud these efforts.
Unfortunately, there is a seedy underbelly to SimCity. No, not mobsters. It's the boredom factor. Once you build a town and fill it from city limit to limit, you become just a greedy old mayor. Even before your town is complete, it is more a goal to make $100,000 than to create a park. You easily get drawn into the budget as opposed to other aspects of running a city. This forces the game to be one dimensional. After a while this does not even compel you. You could start a new city, but why? You know how it is going to end. In fact, a good ending would be a perfect cure for this game.
So, if you like designing or creating your own systems, you will enjoy this game. However, if you favorite game is Duke Nukem, you probably won't last a long time at the keyboard.
