DirtyDan's Full Review: Tomb Raider for PlayStation 1
This is one of the best Playstation game out. Both in 1996 (when the game came out) standards and by todays standards. I picked this up at Comp USA for $14.99 in the used section because I wanted to see if it lived up to all of the hype.
It did. Big time.
You are Lara Croft an Englishwoman (too bad) with a taste for adventuring. You are on a quest for an ancient artifact, that is all the story you re going to get in this review but I will tell you that the story is good, but it isn't the only reason that you want to continue playing the game (unlike a lot of games.)
The first thing I noticed was the graphics. They're a little old. This doesn't take away from the game however. Lara is animated beautifully (a little pointy in one area though.) The backgrounds are pretty good and really good in the Egyptian levels.
The sound is pretty good also. All of Lara's sounds are realistic. One of the things that I like the most is that the music only plays occasionally at certain times the rest of the time it's just you making noise and creepy tomb silence.
The control and gameplay are where this game really is great. The controls are simple and allow you to perform all kinds of acrobatic moves (think Mary Lou Retton meets Jean Claude Van Damme.) The puzzels are pretty standard for adventure games and some of them are really tough (see my title.) To be honest Tomb Raider doesn't have a lot of replay value, but it's longer than most adventure games so it's not a big deal.
If you have a spare 15 bucks around turn off the computer and buy this now. You will have a great time
