| mllm's Full Review: Maytag Gemini MGR6772BDS Stainless Steel Gas Range |
I purchased this range about 3 1/2 years ago for its compact double-oven design. I thought it was a smart space-saving unit.
The range worked fine until Nov.26, 2007 evening; as I was cooking on one burner, the other three burners started to ignite themselves (they made popping sounds and sparked); soon, smoke and fire came out from one of the burner-control-knobs. I quickly turned off the burner I was using; the smoke and fire finally died down. Luckily, I was right beside the range, otherwise, the extend of damage would be much more than only a burned-plastic-knob.
I reported the incident to Maytag the next morning. Maytag sent a technician from A&E Factory Service on Nov.30, 2007 to inspect the problem. The technician explained to me that parts underneath the burned burner-control-knob needed to be replaced. In order to do the repair, all four burner-heads needed to be taken off. However, the screws locked down the burner-heads were not able to be loosened by screw driver after accumulation of 3 1/2 years of cooking-residue. The technician forced two screws of one burner-head to break and told me that he needed to break all screws and orifice holders to release all four burner-heads and I shall pay for new screws and orifice holders and associated labor cost. I later found out that the screws and orifice holders do not need to be broken because the screws can simply be loosened by applying Liquid Wrench.
I am very disappointed with the unprofessional conduct of the service technician.
I am not impressed with the unfriendly construction of the burner-head area.
I have reported the smoke/fire incident to Consumer Product Safety Commission. This product has potential safety hazard. I have replaced it with a new unit.
