Last summer we decided to buy a gas grill. This was one of those just in case items for the possibility of Y2K shutdown. We didn't go crazy in preparation but we took a few precautions just in case. We also figured it didn't have to be Y2K to need this. One year, a gas supply line was ruptured and our town was without gas for two weeks. Not too good in the winter time. We have seen several cases of surrounding communities without services for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. These have been compliments of Mother Nature. So we thought we would be prepared for whatever, so we would at least have a way to cook part of our meals.
My hubby was stuck on charcoal grilling. He figured anything on a gas grill wasn't going to have the same flavor. However, since we now had this product, he figured he should at least learn how it worked. Surprise, surprise. He loved cooking on it. We used it all summer and several times through the winter when the weather was tolerable for running out to cook on the grill.
The taste has been just as good as the charcoal cooking was. The cost is much less for the propane than it was for a summer of cooking with charcoal. Each summer, we went through several large bags of charcoal each costing $3.99 to $5.99 depending on whether we found a sale or not. The propane was about $3.50 for the first fill up which lasted through the whole summer and until about a month ago. Due to the rise in prices the second fill up was a little more but was still only around $4.00.
The gas grill is much faster to cook on since you don't have the long wait for the charcoal to get right. It only takes a few minutes for the rock to get hot and you are set to cook. You have control over the heat level with the gas grill that is not as possible with some charcoal grills. Also there is no lighter fluid to mess with. My hubby feels he gets more consistent good results with the gas grill as opposed to the charcoal grill.
Hubby is the outdoor chef at our house but I finally got him to teach me how to turn it on so the rock would be hot when he came home. That way we could get in a meal even on nights that it got dark shortly after he got off work. We have enjoyed it so much that our Weber which we really loved and used is sitting there lonely. We will still use the Weber for slow cooking roasts. Those are really great too.
I would recommend this gas grill to anyone who wants to be able to cook out anytime. And at least if we lose our power due to a Mother Nature outage we will still eat good. Thanks Y2K for the blessing you forced us to buy. Try it, you'll like it.
