It was time to give up on the 30+ year old Kenmore that I inherited from my parents (who inherited it from my dad's folks). It was a heavy-duty top loader that would occasionally overflow when running the perm-press cycle. But otherwise, it was a workhorse that seemed like it would never die. It was the efficiency features of the front-loading washers that made me decide to replace my old reliable.
I really like the fact that this model uses about half the water and half the soap as a conventional, top-loading washer. Plus, the tumbling action results in better stain removal while treating the clothes more gently than an agitator does. It can even handle bedspreads that the agitators can't deal with.
Even though this washer is much more expensive than most, I believe that the difference is quickly recaptured with savings on hot water, soap, and clothing.
