| jsmorris's Full Review: Sabrina, the Teenage Witch |
In my opinion, Fridays are one of the few nights that are geared toward family entertainment. The ABC line up includes Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Boy Meets World, and a couple of other programs focused toward all members of the entire family.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch is one of the shows we enjoy. This is a spin off of the 60's sitcom Bewitched with a few modifications. The story revolves around Sabrina, a teenager not only coping with the normal teenage problems of acne, boyfriends and peer pressure (to name a few) but also with the powers associated with being a witch. These developing powers and the outcome of an inexperienced witch are at times hilarious.
Sabrina (played by Melissa Joan Hart of Clarissa Explains It All fame) lives with her two aunts (Hilda and Zelda) and their outrageous, talking house cat Salem (who should have his own show!). The aunts are quirky and intelligent and find themselves involved with trying to raise Sabrina with values and appropriate behavior. As a parent of a teenage girl, I can attest that this alone could be an overwhelming responsibility in today's society. When combined with also having to direct Sabrina's magic to an appropriate level, the result is very comical at times.
The support cast is animated, funny and enjoyable. The story lines are not the type that will incur thought provoking discussions after watching the show, but instead are there for pure enjoyment, and as such are very well done.
If you're looking for thirty minutes of fun and non-mental TV programming then this is a show you may want to check out. But if you're looking for a program that will promote deep thinking or story lines that will set an example for each difficult situation children face these days, you should check out Lifetime or Discovery channels.
