| CLKneeland's Full Review: Wonder Years, The |
The Wonder Years which was on for five seasons, stars Fred Savage as Kevin Arnold, a 12 year old pre-teen exploring life through the 60's and 70's, who is trying to find his own path in life. We follow his thoughts, life experiences and crushes through the narration of Daniel Stern as the adult Kevin, better known for playing the robber in Home Alone.
With an all star cast that includes, Dan Lauria as Jack Arnold, his father, Olivia D'Ablo as his older sister Karen, who has issues with her family, Jason Hervey as his annoying and unfeeling brother Wayne, Alley Mills as Norma his almost perfect mom, Joshua Savino as his best friend and of course, Dancia McKeller as Winner Cooper, the crush, the love of his life, the friend and soul mate.
The show follows all that Kevin encounters, from making friends, to losing friends, to being in love and losing his first love, from the isolation from his father and the smothering of his mother and an estranged relationship with his sister and the unfeeling brother who always enjoys torturing his younger him.
As I watched the show, I remembered my childhood and I remembered how tough it was to be a kid, the teasing, trying to fit in, the curiosities of sex, my parents not understanding me, friends who you were so close to but somehow drifted apart, the pimple that would ruin your date, how to kiss, dating for a week and thinking it was the end of the world, the little things that seemed so important like being invited to a party or being in the right crowd. As Daniel Stern narrates Kevin's life, I not only can relate to Kevin as a child but also as an adult.
It is interesting to see the perspective of a 12 year old in the 60's and 70's where man first walked on the moon, the death of JFK, Martin Luther King and Vietnam. They address so many issues of race and creed. As they follow his life and the world changes, so does he and no matter if you are a 12 year old then or now, you will enjoy this show because I can guarantee that most of us have had the same experiences that Kevin has had, embarrassing or uplifting.
You can see The Wonder Years on Nick at Night where they show the re-runs. I can't help but watch sometimes, just to reflect back. It really is a great show.
