Pros: stunning, quaint, peaceful hotel
Cons: not much, just the free breakfast is ordinary
The Bottom Line: I enjoyed the experience. It is not a five star hotel but it fits within the ambiance of the Santa Barbara area.

| doglover's Full Review: Upham Hotel And Garden Cottage |
I had the occasion to go for a job interview in Santa Barbara last year and the company that I interviewed with put me up in the Upham Hotel & Country House. All I can say is what an experience. This hotel which boasts 50 individually decorated guest rooms and suites, is situated in the heart of Santa Barbara, within minutes to the beach. This hotel was established in 1871, and it is like going back in time.
I already have written a review of the Santa Barbara area, so I will focus instead in this review on my experience at the hotel, specifically my stay in the Lincoln Room. It is located at 1404 De La Vina Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101, (805) 962-0058, (800) 727-0876 There is a nice patio area in the center of all the rooms, with a patio and a gazebo. Since the stay was paid for the company I was interviewing with, I do not know the cost of the hotel.
ROOM DETAILS
The room is an old-style room, with soft yellow walls and white decorative molding. The thing that blew me away is that you still use a key to open the door. When entering the room, I immediately smelled the fresh yellow daisies on the night stand. The room itself had the standard set of toiletries, a full cable TV, cotton balls in the bathroom, a hair dryer and iron in the closet. There was also a sofa and a desk in the room. The best part was the bed, with a down comforter and pillows. I often cannot sleep in hotels because of the uncomfortable bed, but in this case I felt great and was relaxed and ready for my all day interview.
BREAKFAST DETAILS
The continental breakfast in the hotel lobby off of the patio consisted of cereal, hard-boiled eggs, milk, juices, muffins and fruit. I would recommend instead checking out the great breakfast restaurants along the beach.
MISCELLANEOUS
* easy check-in
* free map of area at desk
* restaurant called Louies in the hotel
* in the evening, they have oreo cookies in the lobby (hit the spot since flying into Santa Barbara is difficult because of the small airport)
CONCLUSION
If you are in the Santa Barbara area, I would highly recommend staying at this hotel. It was a perfect central location to everything in the area and do not forget to check-out the mall area and butterfly beach while there.
