| traveller72's Full Review: National Hotel |
The National was the premier art deco hotel when it opened in 1927, and, after a long period of decline has been refurbished in the South Beach Renewal since 1997. Recently, the hotel has been undergoing a total refurb. I spend 4 days there with a conference, and was very pleased with the quality of the service, the attentiveness of the staff, and the comfort of the rooms. The location is superb, right in the heart of South Beach on Collins Ave. with beach access.
The rooms have all of the amenities including free internet service, daily NY Times, shoe shines, daily delivery of ice, turndown service with chocolates, excellent concierge service, meeting rooms, an excellent fitness center, beautiful lap pool, beach chairs and umbrellas, and free shoe shines. Well, not quite free because they tack on $10. for some of the "resort" services which is a growing practice in Florida hotels, but which just needs to be factored into the base price since it does not seem to be optional.
Do not go the the breakfast buffet, which is $25. even if all you have is a muffin and coffee. Go to the lovely french bakery down the street or the cuban 24 hour breakfast place across the street.
The best rooms are those that have an ocean view in the main part of the hotel. They are smallish as expected for a historic type hotel, but perfectly adequate except for the bathroom shelf space.
