socnorb777's Full Review: ESPN Magazine Subscription
I am a huge sports nut, and I enjoy ESPN the magazine tremendously! I used to have a subscription to both ESPN and Sports Illustrated, but SI is more expensive, and is not nearly as edgy. SI is more traditional and old school, which is fine if you're a 57 year old sports enthusiast, but for those of us in our twenties we are looking for something which realizes that sports is just a fun distraction (albeit an important distraction!) and can take things a little less seriously and can poke fun at the stupid things in sports. ESPN does a great job of this!
The magazine definitely does not take itself seriously, which is only a problem if you are ALWAYS serious about sports, which is just nuts, these are men getting paid obscenely for playing games, it's not the future of the free world at stake here! ESPN recognizes that, and gets sarcastic, goofy, fun, and sometimes just plain dumb. It's for people with a passion for enjoying sports, but not for those who take sports to be the epoch of life.
The magazine is oversized, which is one of it's only drawbacks apart from having a lot of ads, but thats just business reality there. The photos are always top notch, there are great sections to read, humorous articles, great interviews where ESPN personalities talk about life with sports stars instead of just talking sports. At times there are inside jokes which are only funny for those of us who like sports, and for everyone else just don't make sense. There are good articles which get inside the heads of people, and the magazine looks ahead to what's happening more than back at what has already happened.
If you love sports, it's a fun read. If you're in your twenties AND you love sports, you'll love it. If you're just looking for human interest stories pick up a readers digest instead, but this magazine is worth reading and in my humble opinion far outdoes Sports Illustrated, but read and decide for yourself!
