Out of all the magazines coming into our home, FamilyFun magazine is the one my daughter and I are most excited about! Usually magazines are set aside until I have time to sit and read an article, not this one! It is cracked open as soon as it arrives! I am not a crafty person with exciting new ideas just coming to me. I am all thumbs when it comes to thinking up ideas for crafts or art projects. BUT you would not know it as my secret is FamilyFun! People who come to our home are amazed at the projects we have done or are working on. All thanks to this magazine that I highly recommend! Many times I find craft ideas cumbersome, difficult, and down right nutty. Or we do not have the stuff to do them. In FamilyFun, they use stuff that you normally have around the house! My least part of this magazine is the fact that I miss many holiday ideas as the issue arrives after the holiday---like April Fool's Day already passed and I just received the new issue this past week.
The current issue has 124 pages filled with tons! Bright colorful illustrations of actual kids and step by step instructions on doing crafts. We have cut out the pictures and made a collage before! You will see children of every hue in the issues and all are happy smiling and gorgeous!
The Behind the Scenes from the editors we see a picture of Karen Tack's pantry stuffed full of cake decorating supplies which talks about Karen Tack and her obsession with cake decorating...later on, we read a section called Let them eat cake.
Mailbox is filled with bright and colorful reader's submissions talking about doing a craft and then we see the children with the craft they did! So cute! The only drawback? I wish we had done the crafts that they did!! Like this issue has Christmas crafts and I love the shirts created with handprints and Santa hats.
Everyday Fun starts the party off right! Straight away we see a timely craft perfect for the season. This issue has Bloomin' Buttons , a houseplant is all decorated with pastel buttons!! Even an April Fools' day craft....that would surely trick anybody!! Foam Flyers has a way to turn syrofoam into a toy! The current issue has nine different ideas from food recipes to fun crafts for spring.
Creative Solutions has an idea on how to save memories of your children...a mom wrote the article about journaling.
MyGreatIdea has a number of suggestions from readers. This section has ideas on just about everything from keeping kids busy on long drives to getting kids to eat their veggies and everything in between! I love this section for pertinent information from experienced parents who found something that worked for them!
FamilyTraditions showcases a father who has his children compete in cooking with each other. Really neat! He suggests a type of food to cook with or a color of food ...what a way to make eating healthy fun and interesting for all!
FamilyGetaways is also a great section for families with children. Learn about family friendly destinations each issue from readers who have been there! This issue is about Jamestown, Virginia and has a diary of sorts with each day's activities. This section has best places to stay in the area Great Wolf Lodge and Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel as well as other resources. Readers can submit their ideal destinations and could win a digital camera! Another reader sent in their details about Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in Three Rivers, California.
HealthyFun is a section on simple tips to keep children healthy. From food to dental habits, you will find it here.
GearingUp shows a girl in rain gear and has arrows pointing to all items she is wearing with where to buy it and how much it costs. Most expensive article of clothing is LandsEnd rain slicker for $35 and cheapest is a net to catch frogs in for $18 at naturepavillion.com. Then a little boy is shown catching bugs and his gear. Cheapest item is the magnifying glass for $5 at coleman.com and most expensive his bug shirt for $36 at oliebollen.com. At the end, recommendations for safety items such as insect repellant.
Mom of the Month showcases a mom... extraordinary ordinary readers. This has her stats like age and occupation with questions that FamilyFun asked her and her answers. The best part is at the bottom of the page in Stuff I Love by the mom!
Let's Cook has a seasonal recipe. This month is a goody... Fauxberry Pie with pink icing. Of course it is a trick, this pie is not a pie but meatloaf!! Out of potatoes but will be trying this one after I run to the store!
Our Favorite Things has products for kids and what the editors thought about them. I really enjoy this section for finding out about new toys, books, and games for kids. Includes pictures of the item and age recommendations.
Try This Now is for kids and on the last page. This month has an optical illusion.
The features in this edition include Outdoor Science which has easy science activities , Caution! Party in Progress which is about a construction theme birthday party, Let Them Eat Cake which has not one but SIX different cakes to choose from including a Sand Castle Cake , Secrets of Organized Families which was the first page I turned to!!, and Our Town readers tell about their favorite places nearby to visit with kids.
I usually find many advertisements distracting in magazines and grumble having to turn page after page to get to the articles but this magazine is completely different. I WANT to see the ads for kids' products and toys! You will not find get rich quick schemes types of ads but new shoes on the market for kids or the newest game that children will love. Ignore the age recommendations for this magazine....these crafts even small children can help do something and enjoy it and older kids will love it as well! If you run a daycare or are an elementary school teacher, there are plenty of creative ideas for crafts! Homeschool-ers will delight in the seasonal activities and even the great ideas for field trips and child-friendly destinations. What I love about this magazine's crafts is that they do not require you to go spend $30 to make a simple craft for kids....most supplies are stuff you have lying around that you do not need! I have not spent a dime on craft supplies for anything that we have done....like the buttons for the houseplant...we have tons of buttons that we have collected anyways for making crafts! So that cost us $0.
The price is $34.95 at news stands but around $10.00 for yearly subscriptions.Well worth it for cheap ideas on easy crafts that your children will love! Be the cool mom or dad on the block! 10 issues sent out yearly and this is a monthly subscription....hm, that does not sound right but it is correct!
FamilyFun, the country's number one family magazine, is about all the great things families can do together. We are the family experts on travel, food, crafts, parties, holidays, games, activities, and products--all the essentials that enrich the important time parents and children share.FamilyFun magazine's Toy of the Year (T.O.Y.) Awards, announced each year in our November issue, relies on testing by parents and children to determine the best toys for families to give and to get for the holidays. FamilyFun magazine, which launched in 1991, is published ten times a year by Disney Publishing Worldwide and has a circulation of 2 million readers. The T.O.Y. awards have to be my all time favorite to see in this magazine!
FamilyFun has launched a new program to help you raise money for your child's school. Here's how it works: for every $10 FamilyFun subscription your group sells, your school will get to keep $5. Seasonal creative crafts, know about the new children's products on the market, child's birthday party ideas, just everything!
What is unique about this product?
All about crafts and children's life tips and ideas.
Is it worth the price?
Yes, well worth it!
There has to be some bad to this product, right?
Age recommendation really is not true, smaller and bigger children will love to do the crafts too. Our subscription comes sometimes after the holiday has passed for example April Fools Day suggestions in this issue came too late!
Any warnings people should be aware of?
Subscription is cheap, the new children's products on the market are not and you will want everything you see in this great magazine! I do!
Final verdict:
A wonderful magazine that we are so excited to receive each time! Great ideas on crafts and even tips on problems you may be having in organization or time saving advice as well as child-friendly destinations and suggestions on where to stay while there. Can't beat the low price of this magazine and any family with children would love the gift of FamilyFun!
