Estella Got Her Groove. Cover of GQ. Estella standing with her thumbs stuck in the top edge of her bottoms with open white hooded zip sweat jacket and nothing underneath (I know there's nothing underneath because it's unzipped and most of what is underneath shows.
I guess if the description above got your attention, you might be interested in the offerings of GQ (Gentlemen's Quarterly) Magazine. My daughter had purchased this GQ copy for my husband, who was leaving on a long overseas plane flight. She picked up this, along with a couple of other magazines for men that she thought would help him pass the time. I'm sure it did!
This was the first GQ that I had seen or read and wondered what was that woman doing on the cover? I thought that this was about men's fashions. I also assumed that the cover would have a picture of a well dressed man; not an under dressed model. I have since seen other copies of GQ and the cover always seems to be an attractive woman with a follow up interview of the cover girl inside. The latest is entitled, "Sexy Ashley Judd" and has Ms Judd in a low cut red dress on the cover.
Am I offended by this blatant sexuality? Of course not. These covers just prove what we have all known for a long time. Sex sells. GQ has probably discovered over time, that if you want men to buy your magazine, you have to offer things that men enjoy. Beautiful women is definitely at the top of that list.
It was interesting to note their advertisements. It summarized men's interests in a nutshell. Maybe not a nutshell, since there was soooo... many ads! They mainly were for: cars, clothes, beer, sunglasses, jewelry, watches, and colognes. Most used women in bikinis as models with some masculine male models thrown in. Do these ads sell products in the magazine? I'd bet that they sell a lot through this venue. So it's great advertising.
Along with the above are the actual articles and sections themselves. I felt that these were diverse and well written. In fact, I couldn't believe how much they were able to cover in one issue. Some were in depth and many were superficial. But all were interesting and the subjects were varied enough to appeal to all men's age groups.
In the issue I read, some of the articles included:
..An interview with Steven Sodenbergh (who wrote Erin Brackovich
..The money makers in Silicon Valley
..What a man should be earning at different ages
..Eating to live forever
and
..All about the NBA
Some of the monthly articles and columns include:
...The Money Culture with features such as how to spend $20,000 and what to buy with it
...A monthly non-fiction selection called this month, "In The Company of Men
...Straight Advice for the Horizontally Inclined
...A fiction story
...Personal Best which features advice on health and fitness (This month entitled, "American Booty."
...Monthly interviews with celebrities Called The Players
...Music reviews and interviews with musicians
...Balls (a sports feature)
...Culture Clash which this month was based on an interview with Steve Allen
...Manners
...The Style Guy
...Lapses in Judgement
...Trends
...Guy Food (recipes)
...Guy Tech (tech products reviewed)
After reading this issue, I have to surmise, that GQ feels that men want a fashion magazine set up in the same format and style that women's magazines have used for ages; a lot of diverse issues covered with little depth, and a few fashion shots thrown in. I was disappointed that there was so little time spent on men's fashions in a magazine that I had believed to be a fashion magazine . It was not a Vogue but a Cosmo. I enjoy a Cosmo but if I wanted to know fashion I'd be disappointed that it didn't have any. That's the way I felt about GQ. If they hadn't always advertised that this was a fashion magazine for men (I expected to see new trends, business suits fashions, and clothes for men to wear on Casual Friday.) What I did find, however, wasn't bad. Clever articles on things that men like.
