Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman are the two basic North American magazines dealing with the hobby. They also are where the largest discount sellers of Model and Toy trains place their advertizements. Both also publish advanced materials ,as well as basic information so they reach a more catholic audience than others. The other broad magazines are not aimed at either period modelers or beginners. The other three with smaller sales are not found on newstands or in the magazine sections of the big box booksellers such as Borders and Chapters. Two of that threesome, namely Model Railroading and Rail Modern Journal, focus on modern railroading. Diesel-electric locomotive detailing and an inexhaustible series of articles and photographs of railcars to aid in detailing those kits to make them more exact copies of prototypes is their stock in trade. The last of them, Canadian Modeler, does not have this bias toward the contemporary, and also deals with scratchbuilding equipment and models of structures. Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman contain more scratchbuilding articles than these other publications. Model Railroader is especially good for information related to constructing model railroad layouts. Railroad Model Craftsman is especially good at how railroads serve particular industries so they can be adapted to the model railroad layout. Curiously, both of these magazines have been criticized for there concentration on basics, but at the same time they have presented scratch building and electronic projects more advanced than anything found in there competitors. Model railroaders come in three classes. The beginner and person who has built one layout; the intermediate modeler who largely reworks ready built diesel-electric locos and railcars to be more exact models of the real thing and has mastered realistic layout building; and lastly the model railroader who can build models from scratch, and does not rely upon prebuilt trains or structures to create his model railroad layout. Mainline Modeler ,and the Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette are the two model publications aimed at the latter category, and are both worth reading by those who haven't reached that state of modeling excellence because of the slant they bring to the hobby. Lots of magazines on the subject for the Canadian and American model railroader, but in the long run Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman will provide you with the most useful information.
