Yes, Out is probably one of the better GLBT magazines out there. In my opinion, Instinct and Genre really don't make enough noise in the groundbreaking journalism department, and are really more of a showcase of ads.
The Advocate which I think is the first major GLBT mag, would be Out's prime competitor, but it too can be sometimes lacking in making some pro gay noise the way it used to in its glory days. There's also XY, which is geared toward gay youth, which I feel contains some of the most strongest moral, ethical, and political messages and essays about this gay life.
Nice review.

Thanks - eye candy always does seem to make a magazine better, doesn't it? And Out got some pretty good stuff in some of those fashion shoots and throughout the rest of it.

sometimes if you dig a bit...
I'll admit, plenty of fashion and fluff, but occasionally there's something worth reading. Little glimmers under all that dust.

something to read in OUT? I thought it was all outlandish fashions (ads and editorial content).

Glad to help - some of the reviews are my more earlier reviews (and thus a bit rough I think), but I hope you enjoy them.

and thanks for the links. I must admit I hadn't read most of them but that's remedied and you're on my alert list.

when I read "lifestyle" magazines I sometimes feel like a homeless person peering into a bakery window
An excellent point. I know that we all like to dream (I'd like a BMW roadster, but I'm not getting it anytime soon), but at the same time, I would like a magazine to somewhat reflect real experiences and real life. Somewhere out there, people do live like that, but I don't and I don't know anyone that does. I think that if there ever was such a magazine, be it for the queer community or the straight community, it would be a hit because it would reflect the way we really live, instead of presenting an unattainable fantasy.
We all try to keep up with the Jones and all these kinds of magazines do is to fuel that feeling and push us to reach goals that are beyond our reach.

"I mean, dont we all live in urban centers, have great jobs with plenty of free time for vacations, have extra money for countless skin care products, drive the newest cars and enjoy the finest liquors?"
This is a complaint I have with most of the "women's" magazines I have read. I so wanted to like Oprah's magazine, for example, but I feel like I'm separated from her intended readership because I don't have piles of cash bulging out of my pockets. When she does a fashion piece and I read the prices, they sometimes literally match my rent. The dishes sometimes don't match when I have a garden party. However, many people read magazines to dream a bit. I understand that, but when I read "lifestyle" magazines I sometimes feel like a homeless person peering into a bakery window. Anyway, where am I going with this...just wanted to say this is an excellent review.
