nimrodAPW's Full Review: Spin Magazine Subscription
Spin is a definitive magazine for America's youth. They are not just a normal rock/pop music publication, but one that goes far beyond that. They cover everything from politics, trends, music, movies etc.
Features Articles/Columns
I was mainly attracted to Spin for it's diverse music articles. They have columns on everything from Eminem to The Get Up Kids. Spin also reports on the latest music scenes. You don't have to worry about their writers sugar coating anything either, they speak their mind and are brutally honest. I am even occasionally surprised by some of the content of some of the articles. The "Going Postal" section doesn't stray away from being brutally honest, and sometimes offensive. Spin publishes readers praising AND criticizing them, and some of those letters aren't too nice!
Whenever I received my copy of Spin in the mail, I would always rush to the very back page of the magazine and read a column called "Genius Lessons" by Sean Landers. These were non-fictional stories that chronicled the past experiences in the life of the author, Sean Landers. He wrote witty, funny, entertaining stories on everything from puberty/growing up to the loss of his father. If the rest of Spin wasn't that good, I could always look forward to this months "Genius Lessons" to be excellent, as it always was.
Recently, Sean Landers wrote a column on how he was going to be fired. I thought it was a big joke, but to my dismay, it wasn't. After Sean was gone, Spin replaced the back of the magazine with stupid poems, and other miscellaneous, semi-entertaining things. I want "Genius Lessons" back!!
Reviews
What you will usually find in the near end of the magazine is their reviews of new and upcoming album releases. Their is a brief summary of the writers critique of the album, and they have always had a 1-10 rating system, but the meaning behind those numbers changes monthly. For instance this months (September 2000) scale is;
You get the idea. They have a theme each month, this months theme was a little bit "in your face," but that's how Spin is. I usually don't bother reading the reviews on albums, because I have found that I usually don't agree with the reviewers.
They also have a section called "Exposure" where they do reviews on things that aren't really that popular. Like indy films, rare books, etc.
Who will you most likely find on the cover?
You will most likely find popular, mainstream artists on the cover. They are usually photographed in somewhat surreal situations. Like, for example, one month they had The Smashing Pumpkins on the cover, covered in Vaseline!
Price
This is not another over-priced magazine. The subscription price differs occasionally, but is usually anywhere from $11.95-$9.95 for 12 issues.
So What's Bad About It?
Well, for one thing, about seventy percent of the magazine is advertisements! This is not rare, but still, it is annoying! I think Spin is first and foremost a music magazine, but they don't really focus on music alone. Too much of it is popular/alternative culture.
I recommend this magazine to anyone who is interested in learning about the latest in the trends of America's youth and for someone who wants a magazine with a variety of music articles.
I really like this magazine, and I feel that it is one of the most entertaining 'zines out there right now. I just wish that they would bring back "Genius Lessons!"
