| Gavinsmom's Full Review: Teen Magazine |
I get this magazine because I took advantage of the free year subscription offer on their website. I haven't been a teen for two years, but if I had to suggest a teen magazine to anyone it wouldn't be this one.
Reading a few issues of this magazine would make anyone think that teens need all kinds of advice on how to get out of a bad mood, are only worried about acne and suntans, and actually wear what is mostly couture fashion. Teen tends to be repetitive on articles about lifting your mood, having clear skin, and how to know if he "really" likes you. With one full year of teen I have read about five articles on making my mood happier, three articles on how to improve my skin, and I would say a whole year of figuring out how to tell if he really likes me.
The first few pages of Teen, the ones that try to show what is going to be popular, is pure fluff. From furry purses to shiny bracelets it's the same thing over and over again just with different colors or patterns. The few pages before the end, the ones that show what's going to be popular fashion are also off base. Do they honestly think I'm going to wear a knee-length, pink floral dress with red ankle boots? I don't think so. It would also be nice if the clothes they advertised came from affordable designers. I don't know about most teens, but I wasn't able to afford a shirt for forty dollars and a pair of jeans for eighty. Unless of course I planned on getting a lot of use out of this outfit and didn't have anything else in my closet.
Teen does try to get a little in depth on topics they think are important. They usually highlight someone that's done something good for their community, and usually have a two to three page story about someone's good deed or struggle. These stories make the magazine a little interesting. They also review movies, music, and books, but it's nothing in depth and I never got to good of an idea of whether I'd like something or not. The highlight of the magazine for me is the interviews with celebrities and the why me section that highlights embarrassing moments for teens. Even if the why me gets repetitive it's still fun.
Overall this magazine tries to touch upon deeper topics such as abuse, drugs, truancy, ghosts, love, etc.. but they just don't make the grade. I recommend Cosmopolitan or even Seventeen for better reading.
