| andaryl's Full Review: USA TODAY Baseball Weekly Magazine |
Baseball Weekly is the ultimate read for any baseball fan, which ironically I was lucky to discover. As a subscriber to the LA Times, I thought I was pretty much covered on inside out Dodger information, and would never have paid for a baseball magazine (it's actually a color newspaper format). However, we decided to cash in our airmiles for magazine subscriptions. Now Baseball Weekly is the only one I read, and I will certainly get a paid subscription when the offer expires.
So what exactly does Baseball Weekly give me?
Most impressively, there are box scores for every game in the previous week, as well as extensive updated player and team statistics. My copy never leaves the coffee table until a new one arrives, as I'm continuously using it as a reference guide.
The first couple of pages offer tiny tidbits of information, kind of anecdotes, but my first point of reference is the chatter. The rumours of who wants who and who's going where are very insightful. These are followed by a couple of regular writers offering weekly analysis, the best of which is editor Paul White's "Leading Off".
There's always a player feature interview which takes up about 4 pages. Followed by Team Notes, covering the latest on every team. For the Dodgers, this information is pretty much all covered in the LA Times, but it's good to find out what's happening with everybody else. Other significant features include Fantasy Baseball, Minor League Reports, Transactions, and New Players.
I am also very impressed that by the time I get my copy in the post the information is only 2 days old.
And the Negative...
You could find all the statistical information, in greater depth on the internet; although that's not too convenient when you're sat in front of the TV. Furthermore a lot of the news is old by the time you hear about it from daily TV and newspapers.
In spite of this, Baseball Weekly is the essential guide for any serious baseball fan. It also provides an interesting read for the casual follower.
